Why is Jesse Metcalfe no longer on 'Desperate Housewives'?

Why is Jesse Metcalfe no longer on 'Desperate Housewives'? His character wasn't at all unpopular, in fact, some would say that the scenes between him and Eva Longoria were the hottest of highlights on the show. However, wicked whispers are abounding that his diva-like ways caused him to be written off the show.
